Tenth Anniversary of Boxing Day Tsunami

26 December 2014

Today is the tenth anniversary of the Boxing Day Tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people and displaced more than one million.

While Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India suffered most grievously, the deadly reach of the tsunami extended to 15 countries around the Indian Ocean rim.

26 Australians were among those that died.

The Australian Government made funds available for humanitarian relief and reconstruction efforts, and Australians responded with unprecedented generosity to tsunami appeals.

Today Australians will pause to remember those that were lost and reflect on the scale of a tragedy we hope to never see again.
