Government must answer questions on Wyatt Roy

30 September 2016

Minister Bishop's admission overnight that Wyatt Roy had travelled into the war zone in northern Iraq in defiance of official advice raises serious questions about the Governments involvement in this incident.
Immediately prior to Mr Roys visit to Iraq, Australias Ambassador to Israel tweeted pictures of the former LNP member at our embassy in Tel Aviv.
The Foreign Minister must now come clean on what prior knowledge she had of Mr Roys trip and was the Prime Minister or anyone in his office aware of the trip beforehand.
Given Mr Roy is described as a 'foreign public figure' by the local commander in Iraq did he in any way characterise himself as being a representative of the Australian Government?
Did the taxpayer pay for some or all of his trip?
Noting that Mr Roy claims his group came under enemy fire has the Government confirmed whether or not he travelled to anarea declared by the Foreign Minister, which would be an offence under section 119.2 of the Criminal Code Act (which carries penalties of up to 10 years jail)?
And given the criticism from both the Foreign Minister and Prime Minister of Mr Roys trip, will he be interviewed by Australian Border Force Counter-Terrorism Unit personnel or other security agencies when he tries to return home?
Warzones are not places for people to act out their boyhood fantasies.
Mr Roys actions were an unwise and dangerous act for a former LNP member of Parliament, who should be expected to know better.
The Foreign Minister cannot wash her hands of this scandal by issuing a statement. This is her Liberal Party colleague, a man she once remarked would one day be Prime Minister. She must give a full and frank account of her knowledge of Mr Roys movements in Iraq.
As Mr Roys former Queensland LNP colleague Peter Dutton put it, the fight against IS should be left to Australia's military, not "cowboys" who put themselves in harm's way and might lead to other Australians being forced to risk their lives to rescue them.
