PRESENTER: Well were joined now by Finance Minister Penny Wong, from Adelaide. Senator Wong, thank you for joining us. Twelve months on
WONG: Good to be with you.
PRESENTER: Thank you. Twelve months on, can you say that the Labor Party did the right thing in getting rid of Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister?
WONG: Look, Ive no doubt that theres always going to be a lot of commentary today. But Ill be honest with you, were not focused on the past, were focused on the job ahead.
Weve focused on things like rolling out the National Broadband Network, to connect Australians through faster broadband, to deliver better services in education and health. A big announcement yesterday a very good step forward. These are the things that Julia Gillard and the Government are focused on.
PRESENTER: Well, how exactly has the working of the Government changed under Ms Gillards leadership? What has she been able to do that Kevin Rudd couldnt?
WONG: Im happy to talk to you about Julia Gillard, and Julia is extraordinarily hard working, intelligent and competent. And shes also someone who is determined to do the right thing for the nation, even if that requires some tough times. And theres no doubting that we have some tough times at the moment. Because were looking to deliver important reforms in the face of an Opposition that is simply going to block, oppose and scaremonger about anything.
But shes determined to do whats right, and thats why were pressing ahead with things like broadband, the National Broadband Network, action on climate change, which, as you know, even John Howard agreed nearly five years ago that we needed to do something about it. So Julia is very focused, as is the Government, on these goals.
PRESENTER: Certainly some challenges ahead. Minister Wong, thanks for joining us.
WONG: Good to be with you.
